Thank you for your feedback. We at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are working to include your experiences and address your questions as our website takes shape. We can’t reply individually to everyone, but we’re grateful for your help.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Keep the menu bar at the top of the page static

Having to scroll back to the top of the page in order to change sections is very annoying. The sections menu should always stay on top for easy navigation to another section.

    • Offer options to condense the layout

This feels a lot like Google's new designs, which use a lot of white space and giant text. They offered the options to condense the layout - not sure if that's an option with your design or not.

Not a fan of how the stories are broken into multiple pages after a few paragraphs.

Also looks terrible on my mobile device right now.

      • While the new design is an improvement, I would like to suggest some aesthetic and navigation changes.

        1. Use Anchor Tag navigation, which will keep the navigation bar visible and available no matter where you scroll.

        2. Do not break up an article and force another click to view the entire article... this is a user experience disaster and is amateurish. You would never see that on the NY Times or the Washington Post.

        3. Just like with a physical paper, I do not read the paper cover to cover. I go to Page 1, Business, Sports, A&E and maybe OpEd. I would like to see a customizable paper that has vertical columns with headlines for each…

        • place obituaries link and market info "above the fold"

I also agree with keeping the same domain or dropping one of the "p's" so as not to confuse with PPG industries. Isn't "pgnow" available?

            • Move the top advertisement

The top ad still looks tacky and makes the P-G look like a small town paper. Other major papers (WaPo, Globe and Mail, to name a few) keep the top advertiser in a large section to the right, instead of adjacent to the top links. Combining the tacky Pool City ad with those awful link colors saps a lot of credibility from the homepage. Another option is to use expanding ads or transition ads (Washington Post uses transition ads for all multimedia segments), keeping the overall look clean while still maximizing advertiser revenue.

You should make popular PG sites more accessible with the new layout

                  • Consult basic design principles

Human eyes are horizontal, not vertical. The layout is absolutely perplexing, with headlines vertical in the middle and ADVERTISING horizontal atop?

Who did this to you, and why? I'll take names.

                      • I would remove the more from the Web section.

The more from the Web section is never contextual to the story being read so it adds little value. From a business standpoint, it pull readers off of your site.

When a video is completed another is started immediately and that is a pain in the but.

                            • It's an improvement

Better than the old but not quite there. Start by looking at the USA Today app and go from there. It is simple, clean, easy to navigate. The sections are easy to get to and get back to.
When I click on the local or sports etc tab, I don't just want a few articles from that section at the top of the page, I wanna switch to that section to go through all the articles. The subheads are good (steelers, pens, high school, etc) to help me narrow the focus, but I would still like to be able to…

                              • edit for simplicity

I like the colors and some of the style of beta site, but you should also incorporate the simplicity of what you currently have at post-gazette.com. I prefer the post-gazette for online news because it's very clear and easy to view the latest stories. The beta site would take a while to get used to, and, even after figuring it out, it might not be the best of use of space or the easiest to navigate.

                                  • Instead focus on modest incremental improvements to the current functional design

The new design appears to be a devolution from the existing site. Items are randomly strewn around the page with no particular focal point as with the current scrollable headlines for example. Information is not well organized as with the simple three external feeds at bottom of current page and video content directly in the middle. Those three external feed lists could be adjusted to avoid duplicate content and draw in additional unique headlines. The new site has an auto-generated or spam-like feel of mass content distribution rather than a carefully formed presentation of relevant local and national information.

I always found the PG online difficult to maneuver: The opening page had WAY TOO MANY heading types and scattered sections. Which was important? Which had items of interest to me? It was hard to tell. I quickly gave up scanning it all and zeroed in on a couple easy to read sections, particularly the AP headlines at the bottom. Whatever you do here make it easy and clear and simple.
